Sud谩frica suspende el uso de vacunas de AstraZeneca

Sud谩frica suspender谩 el uso de la vacuna contra el covid-19 de AstraZeneca en su programa de vacunaci贸n despu茅s de que los datos mostraran que el f谩rmaco ofrece聽una protecci贸n m铆nima contra la infecci贸n leve a moderada聽causada por la nueva variante del virus que predomina en el pa铆s, anunci贸 este domingo el Ministerio de Salud,聽informa聽Reuters.

“La vacuna聽AstraZeneca聽pareci贸 eficaz contra la cepa original, pero no contra la variante sudafricana”, declar贸 el ministro de Salud,聽Zweli聽Mkhize.

El funcionario聽explic贸 que el Gobierno esperar铆a las recomendaciones de los cient铆ficos sobre la mejor manera de proceder. Antes de la aparici贸n de la cepa 501Y.V2, considerada m谩s contagiosa, la vacuna mostraba una eficacia de alrededor del 75 %, pero ahora se ha visto聽reducida a un 22 %聽para los casos no graves.

El estudio realizado por la Universidad de Witwatersrand聽de Sud谩frica y la Universidad de Oxford, que involucr贸 a adultos relativamente j贸venes, no evalu贸 si la vacuna ayud贸 a prevenir los casos graves de covid-19.聽Los datos a煤n no han sido revisados por pares.

Mientras tanto las autoridades sudafricanas tienen planeado administrar en las pr贸ximas semanas a los trabajadores de la salud vacunas desarrolladas por Johnson & Johnson y Pfizer.

Por su parte, la farmac茅utica brit谩nica聽reconoci贸聽que los resultados del estudio demuestran una “eficacia limitada” de su vacuna, pero聽afirm贸 que era demasiado pronto para sacar conclusiones finales. AstraZeneca anunci贸 el s谩bado que ya hab铆a comenzado a聽adaptar su vacuna a la variante sudafricana聽y espera que nuevos estudios demuestren que su f谩rmaco es eficaz para prevenir casos graves de la enfermedad causados por las nuevas cepas.

A inicios de mes el pa铆s africano recibi贸聽1 mill贸n de dosis聽de AstraZeneca, producidas por el Instituto de Suero de India. Sud谩frica espera vacunar a 40 millones de personas para lograr alg煤n nivel de inmunidad colectiva.

La variante sudafricana del聽coronavirus聽ya se ha extendido por todo el mundo, con casos notificados en Am茅rica, Europa y Asia.
