Cada 4 de mayo, fans y simpatizantes de la Star Wars celebran el Día de Star Wars, una fecha para homenajear a los personajes, la historia y el trasfondo de la historia creada por George Lucas.

Star Wars, conocida también mundialmente en español como ‘La guerra de las galaxias’, es una franquicia constituida básicamente de una serie de películas concebidas por el cineasta estadounidense George Lucas en la década de 1970, y producidas y distribuidas por The Walt Disney Company a partir de 2012.

El Día de Star Wars fue creado por fanáticos de la saga y posteriormente difundido en redes sociales hasta llegar a ser conocida y celebrada mundialmente.

El origen de la fecha es muy curioso. El 4 de mayo de 1979, cuando el mundo estaba extasiado luego del estreno de la primera película de la saga, el diario británico London Evening News publicó una nota en la que miembros del Partido Conservador del Reino Unido felicitaban a Margaret Thatcher por su recién adquirido puesto como primera ministra del país, incluyendo esta frase “May the Force be with you”, traducido como “que la fuerza te acompañe”.

Esto fue aprovechado por los fans como impulso para crear el Star Wars Day.

Otro hecho a resaltar se produjo en 2011 cuando el Toronto Underground Cinema organizó un festival de cine este día.

Desde entonces multitud de empresas aprovechan la ocasión para ofrecer ofertas y descuentos especiales en sus productos de Star Wars.

Pocas historias mantienen el interés del público después de más de 40 años desde el estreno de Star Wars: Episodio IV – Una nueva esperanza (1977), la primera de la saga, dirigida por George Lucas.

Como sabrán todos los amantes de la saga, la trilogía original fue desarrollada en los años 70 y 80, siendo las películas más valoradas.

Más de una década después surgió la trilogía de las llamadas “precuelas” ya que cuentan la historia anterior a la trilogía original.

A finales de 2012 Disney adquirió Lucasfilm, productora de las seis películas anteriores, y anunció la realización de una tercera trilogía, junto con dos películas derivadas y con la categoría de “Historias de Star Wars”.
