Tokio registró nuevo récord de casos de coronavirus en medio de los Juegos Olímpicos

Desde Tokio reportaron 5.042 contagios de coronavirus en las últimas 24 horas, la mayoría causados por la variante Delta.

Tokio informó 5.042 casos de coronavirus en un día, cifra récord desde el inicio de la pandemia en medio de un aumento de los contagios provocado por la variante Delta mientras la capital japonesa es sede de los Juegos Olímpicos.

Las autoridades de Japón registraron más de 14.000 casos en las últimas 24 horas, con el que el total se elevó a unos 970.000, de los cuales alrededor de un cuarto, más de 236.000, corresponden a Tokio.

Tokio y Okinawa se encuentran en estado de emergencia desde mediados de julio, y la medida, que impidió la presencia de espectadores en los Juegos Olímpicos, se extendió esta semana a otras cuatro regiones y se alargó hasta el 31 de agosto.

“Necesitamos abordar la situación, ya que ahora tenemos una mayor urgencia”, dijo a periodistas el primer ministro Yosihide Suga, refiriéndose al nuevo récord de Tokio, que por primera vez superó los 5.000 casos.

“Las infecciones se están expandiendo a un ritmo que nunca antes habíamos experimentado”, agregó, informó la agencia de noticias japonesa Kyodo.

Suga, que fue criticado por insistir en albergar los Juegos Olímpicos pese a la propagación del coronavirus, dijo que no hay evidencia de que el aumento de contagios sea por el evento deportivo, que empezó el 23 de julio y termina el 8 de agosto.

El premier instó otra vez a la gente a ceñirse firmemente a las medidas de emergencia y quedarse en casa a pesar de las vacaciones de verano.

Alarmados por el ritmo de la propagación, algunos expertos pidieron que se amplíe el estado de emergencia que rige en Tokio y en otras cinco áreas a nivel nacional.

En cambio, Suga anunció hoy una versión más suave de las medidas de emergencia en ocho prefecturas, incluidas Fukushima en el Este y Kumamoto en el Sur, con lo que ya 13 regiones cuentan con restricciones.

Suga también se comprometió a “prevenir una mayor propagación del virus redoblando el ritmo de vacunación”.

Expertos que asesoran al Gobierno metropolitano de Tokio advirtieron que las infecciones impulsadas por la variante Delta se han vuelto “explosivas” y podrían superar las 10.000 por día en dos semanas.
