En primer turno, el seleccionado masculino de básquetbol de los Estados Unidos venció a Australia por 97 a 78 con un gran Kevin Durant que marcó 23 puntos, seguido por Devin Booker con 20 y Khis Middleton y Jrue Holiday con 11 cada uno; mientras que para Australia, que eliminó a Argentina en cuartos de final, Patty Mills sumó 15 tantos y Dante Exum 14.

Esta será la tercera vez que se verán las caras Estados Unidos y Francia en una final olímpica. Estados Unidos ganó ambas: 65-21 en Londres 1948 y la recordada 85-76 en Sydney 2000.
