Las Leonas volvieron a subirse al podio en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 y acumulan cinco podios en los últimas seis citas olímpicas.

Las Leonas cayeron 3-1 ante Países Bajos en la final del hockey femenino de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 y se quedaron con la medalla plateada. La selección de hockey femenino finalizó un grandísimo torneo y le dio a Argentina la segunda medalla en esta edición de los JJOO.

Para las Leonas -como se denomina al conjunto nacional de este deporte- significa la tercera final que se escapa luego de la de Sidney 2000 y Londres 2012 pero también la confirmación de que siguen estando en la elite mundial.

Luego de un primer cuarto muy parejo, con una chance de gol clara por lado, las europeas demostraron toda su eficacia en el segundo, en el que marcaron tres goles consecutivos a través de córner cortos de Margot van Geffen y Caia Van Maasakker en dos oportunidades.

En los 15 minutos finales no se sacaron ventajas. Argentina tuvo la bocha y el dominio territorial pero no pudo penetrar en el semicírculo del conjunto neerlandés, que desde su despliegue físico y técnico, casi no sufrió en esa faceta defensiva.

Sobre el final de ese periodo llegó el descuento de Argentina, también desde un córner corto, que Agustina Gorzelany transfomó en gol y que ilusionó a las dirigidas por Carlos Chapa Retegui.

El director técnico de Las Leonas, Carlos Retegui, terminó sin “ningún reproche” luego de la final olímpica perdida en Tokio 2020 ante Países Bajos, rival al que destacó como “el mejor equipo del mundo”.

El “Chapa” valoró la “convicción enorme” con la que jugaron sus dirigidas y expresó su “orgullo” por la medalla de plata alcanzada por tercera vez en la historia de los Juegos.

“Nos ganó el mejor equipo del mundo, sabíamos que iba a ser un partido muy difícil pero hicimos un gran juego. Lo único que siento hacia las chicas es gratitud”, dijo en diálogo con TyC Sports.

“No es fácil ser campeón olímpico. Jugar con Holanda en hockey mujeres es como hacerlo con Estados Unidos en básquet. Llegamos a este torneo con un equipo extremadamente joven, con 13 debutantes. Las Leonas tienen presente y futuro”, celebró.
